This CPS Lives project examines teaching and what it means to be a teacher. I see this photographic essay as a homage to the challenges, triumphs, and hard work and effort of teaching, from the small details to the big picture. This project will help the public better understand teachers and teaching.
The idea is to photograph a teacher in the process of teaching. This includes the obvious times within the teacher’s classroom, but also during preparation time before and after school. In addition, it will be important to join the teacher at “meetings” with team or grade level colleagues, special education staffings, meetings lead by administrators, along with after school activities and parent meetings --- all the aspects of being a teacher.
The project included two CPS schools, the Lázaro Cárdenas Elementary School in Little Village(2021-22 school year) and the Michele Clark Academic Prep Magnet High School (2023-24 school year).
Note: CPS Lives is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization that pairs Chicago artists, designers, thinkers and makers with a Chicago Public School during the academic year to collaborate on a project, sharing the unique and individual story of each Chicago Public School. Each story will be celebrated and exhibited throughout the city in local Chicago Public Library branches and other exhibition spaces, as well as existing on the CPS Lives social media and website as an accessible digital archive of public school history for students, families, community members, educators, administrators, policymakers & the general public.
